Meet African Kahawa Blend: East African Coffee, from Toffee to Cherry

Kahawa is Swahili for coffee. That’s the right door into this bag.

African Kahawa Blend is a medium-dark roast of African-grown coffees. It is a blend, not a single-country, single-farm story. The product page does not pin it to one nation, so this post won’t either.

Holy Grounds Coffees is the brand on the shop. The coffee is roasted and shipped from California by our roasting partner.

What’s in the cup

Not a quiet breakfast blend. Kahawa is medium-dark, and it’s busy in a good way.

Toffee, caramel, and chocolate first. Then fruit: raisins, green apples, red fruits, cherries, black currant. It finishes soft and floral, not sharp.

Brew it espresso if you want chocolate and cherry to sit heavy. Brew it standard drip if you want the fruit and floral to stretch out. This product ships Espresso, Standard, or Whole Bean (no Coarse on the Kahawa page). French press people: order whole bean and grind coarse yourself.

How the cherries are handled

Coffee cherries are often processed by hand at farmers’ homes after hand picking, then washed, sun dried, and hand sorted. That does not make the blend a single origin. It does help explain a medium-dark roast that still tastes bright.

Sizes

12 oz, 1 lb, 2 lb, and 5 lb. Typical 12 oz is $22.99. If two people share a pot most days, size up. Same blend, fewer boxes.

A lighter cousin (different coffee, different job)

Ethiopia Natural is a true single origin from Sidama: medium-light, milk chocolate, fruit, caramel. Same neighborhood of the catalog — African coffee you can drink — not the same origin story. Kahawa is a medium-dark African-grown blend. Ethiopia Natural is a med-light single origin.

First bag

  1. Order African Kahawa Blend. 12 oz to taste, 5 lb if the house already knows.
  2. Espresso, Standard, or Whole Bean.
  3. Taste it black once before cream. The fruit is easier to find that way.
